--- WORLD FIREFIGHTERS GAMES 2008 ---

Countdown to Liverpool is on!

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is delighted to be hosting the 2008 World Firefighters Games in Liverpool as its contribution towards Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture celebrations – and is expecting a staggering 5,000 competitors.

The WFG08 will take place in and around the city between August 24 and September 2, 2008, and Liverpool is now gearing up for this exciting festival of sport and camaraderie. Some events reach out as far as Southport, North Wales and Manchester – making the Games a real North West experience.

The Games is extremely inclusive and firefighters, serving and retired, and their immediate family are eligible. It is not just local authority firefighters either as firefighters from industrial/commercial, civil aviation, military and volunteer fire services are very welcome to come and compete and enjoy the varied social programme with their firefighting colleagues.

A large number of travelling competitors will be accompanied by their families, so the event will have a huge economic boost on the city and surrounding areas. So much so, WFG08 is working with The Mersey Partnership to accommodate visitors – 1,000 hotel beds and 2,300 beds in student halls of residence across the city are provisionally booked. This will ensure that everyone’s budgets are catered for.

WFG08 is a non-profit making event, and any funds remaining once the Games have closed will be split equally between seven chosen charities - Community Foundation for Merseyside, Fire Services National Benevolent Fund (FSNBF), Marina Dalglish Appeal, Lord Mayor of Liverpool’s Appeal (chosen charity for the year 2008/2009), Burned Children’s Club, Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, and Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service’s Fire Support Network.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service intends to make this the most successful World Firefighters Games ever!

Visit www.wfg08.com for the full events programme, latest news, and online registration for competitors and volunteers.

LDLines offered several tickets to French firefighters who will take part in the WFG08.

RÊVES makes the dreams come true of children that suffer from illnesses said to have a “reserved diagnosis”. This medical specificity includes illnesses like cancer, aids or cystic fibrosis. In order to enable these children to escape from the hard everyday life imposed by their illness, RÊVES acts to bring them moral support and to help them project themselves in the future. Indeed, for these children to meet their dreams often helps smiles and hope to come back.
